Gendai Hyakki Yagyo: Modern Day Demon Parade

5/23/2023

Picture
In Japanese Folklore, Hyakki Yagyo is the procession and riot of demons and ghosts in the night causing pandemonium and terror amongst villages. Gendai Hyakki Yagyo: Modern Day Demon Parade is a new take on the old folktales- taking current events and reimagining them as ghost stories told from the future to imagine how ghosts of the past are navigating in our current world.

This show is a part of Push/Pull's Artist-in-Residency Program. This year's AiR, Marie Okuma Johnston, is a first-generation Japanese American who spends their time navigating between the U.S. and Japan. Marie has a love of Japanese Folklore, Edo Period Yokai Art, and creating art pieces that discuss current events and political topics through whimsical imagery.

Join us June 15th from 6-9pm for the Opening Reception!

SPITE! and CACOETHES

5/3/2023

It's time for another summer double-header!

First up is our ol' pal Neil Devlin (@lastbosscomics) with a brand new comic and always awesome art show!

Neil's been a footnote of the Seattle music scene since 2000. He has also made several comic books and worked with many bands, performers and artists as an editor, designer and illustrator. His artwork has graced the walls of Bruce Lurie Gallery (Los Angeles,) Clutter Gallery (Beacon, NY,) Earth 2 Kentucky (Covington, KY) and, of course, Push/Pull Gallery. Not to mention telephone poles all over the country and record store dollar bins all over the world.

Picture
Though I am not a spiteful person by nature, a certain vocal minority of bigots and simpletons, who aim to claw their way to the top with the help of a media cycle desperate for a horror story, keep my natural desire to push back against the status quo active and my need to produce art fueled.

Thus: Spite! My one-person comics anthology of tales I want to tell. An exercise in comics storytelling for immature adults and sophisticated perverts only.

For my comic release show, I will also be bringing a one-person comic convention of bizarre items that I've produced over the years. Toys, comics, prints, shirts and more insanity.

Picture
We'll also have Jess Ray (@wobblefincharts), another Seattle local with a wicked sense of humor, and art to match it!

Jess explores beautiful ugly things and ugly beautiful things and visual jokes, carrying a sense of wonder and playfulness in their art.
The world is a ridiculous place, and humans are ridiculous creatures. We are always doing things that go against our best interests, making bad decisions, even when we know they are bad. Cacoethes means an irresistible urge to do something inadvisable, and I think it’s an essential part of being human. At the same time, the world and its inhabitants are so beautiful, surprising, and wonderful. The absurdity and the beauty seem like they should be mutually exclusive, but they aren’t.

Laughter is often a way for us to resolve cognitive dissonance and cope with ideas and experiences that just don’t make sense. My work is a way to look at the absurdity of the world and human behavior, laugh off the contradictions, and celebrate its beauty at the same time. I love to depict the moment just before something happens - often the moment before something goes terribly wrong - and let the viewer imagine the rest. I feel that it’s a way for us to play together, the viewer and me, and share a laugh. We get to feel a sense of dramatic irony, like we know what’s coming before the subject of the drawing has worked it out.
Both shows will be up May 18 through June 14th at Push/Pull!

Picture
Radio is a trans artist in his senior year of high school, working on a thesis project that focuses on portraying the trans experience in art and visual medias.

LIQUID SOLID TRANSFORMATIONS attempts to convey the parts of being transgender that can't quite be explained with words, including both the hard and happy bits.

The opening reception is Thursday, March 16th, from 6-9pm. The show will be up through April 19th.

To Whoever Even Listen

2/1/2023

Picture
To Whoever Even Listen explores the legacy of intergenerational trauma through three generations of letters, writing, medical records, and autobiographical comics.

Weaving stories from the author's grandmother, an immigrant incarcerated in mental institutions, to the author's own experience as trans, Sansei and disabled, this multimedia graphic novel explores themes of memory, truth, and how to love anyways.

The show will comprise original illustrations, comic pages, and other work used to piece together the graphic novel, which will also be available.

The opening reception is Thursday, February 16th, from 6:00pm to 9:00pm, and the show will be on display for a month.

Moving in Stereo(Scopic)

12/27/2022

Picture
Push/Pull Members and friends present a one-of-a-kind exhibition in...

⚡⚡⚡STEREOSCOPIC VISION⚡⚡⚡

The show concept is old-school 3D art (aka stereoscopic printing), with the red and cyan glasses. Original art is transformed into the third dimension before your very eyes! With the use of a risograph printer and red and cyan glasses, we've taken original art and given it the comic book treatment of days of yore.

We'll also be compiling and releasing a limited run of 100 books containing images of the original art alongside their 3D versions (glasses included). The exhibition will have 3D glasses available for attendees to enjoy the art in its full multidimensional glory.

The opening reception and book release is Thursday, January 19th, from 6-9pm! The show will be on display through February 15th.

The Good Scissors

12/12/2022

Picture
Anyone close to a crafter knows about “the good scissors.” The ones where, if used on the wrong material, become a very sharp, precise weapon from a rightfully wronged maker!

This December, Push/Pull is presenting a group show of 10+ local fiber artists - from cross-stitch/embroidery to macramé, crochet and knitting to tapestry - exploring textures in textiles. This is the first fiber art show at Push/Pull’s new location, and we are thrilled to present this intricate and dynamic artwork.

The opening reception will take place on December 15, 2022 from 6-9pm (a Third Thursday event by Bal-Art).

All work will be shown until January 18, 2023.

Cognitive Dissidents

11/12/2022

Picture
Seattle artist Seth Goodkind brings a whole new body of work to the public for the first time! Join us at Push/Pull from 6-9pm for the opening reception (a Third Thursday event by Bal-Art).

“Cognitive Dissidents is my first 3-D art show. I have always enjoyed building models and working with miniatures, but over the last 5 years as my drawing and tattoo work has transitioned to digital and became a “job,” miniatures increasingly took over as my creative outlet. I love the idea of enclosed worlds. They have a quality of unreality that is isolated from our touch. The scenes feel living, but unreal, there is something inside of them that I’m not the architect of – I’m just giving them the opportunity to exist. Each piece comes together almost as a stream of consciousness assemblage, as an idea strikes me, and I find themes, scales, locations and elements that when put together, challenge or defy our sense of expected reality.”

Seth Goodkind is a tattoo artist at True Love Tattoo and a founding member of Push/Pull, an arts collective in Ballard, Seattle.

Cognitive Dissidents will be on display November 17th through December 14th.

PREY: The Art of Alli Good

9/10/2022

Picture
We're bringing back on of our favorites from the other side of the country - Alli Good (Asheville, NC) - for a special solo show this September.

Opening reception: September 15th, 6pm - 9pm, a Third Thursday event by Bal-Art.

From the artist:
"This body of work is formed by and represents a perspective of anxiety. The show is titled “Prey” because the images contain some religious imagery but also images of anxiety from an AFAB perspective. The loss of rights. The baseline fear that AFAB people carry."

Can't get enough Alli Good? (We don't blame you!) Take her art with you everywhere you go - Alli will be tattooing at True Love Art Gallery & Tattoo on Capitol Hill Saturday the 17th & Sunday the 18th.

PREY will be on display through October 20th.
