Tidepool Dreamer

6/20/2024

Picture
Dive into nostalgic watercolor visions of summer days spent tidepooling. Max Mandell, a resident Push/Pull watercolorist, shares his love for watercolor and his appreciation of the denizens of the shore in this thoughtfully crafted show.

From landscape views to dreamy abstractions, Tidepool Dreamer showcases the breadth of watercolor as a soloist and in mixed-media applications. Detailed views of ancient shores, now redwood forests, meet ethereal and playful postcards of tidepool treasures in this show.

Explore vanishing and delicate ecosystems through beloved sense-memories and join us for the opening reception of Tidepool Dreamer on Friday, July 12, from 6-9 PM!

The show will be on display through August 9.

Push/Pull is on your left as soon as you cross Market St!

Picture
Anyone who's walked around the neighborhood of Ballard inevitably runs into a kitty, whether it's rolling around on a sidewalk, hiding in a bush, or glaring at you from a window.

The Cats of Ballard is a collection of illustrations of different cats Push/Pull member Kaylyn Chileen has photographed and encountered throughout Ballard and nearby Crown Hill since her move to Seattle.

Join us at the opening reception Saturday, June 15, from 6-9 PM, with snacks and refreshments. You might see a familiar face, or even your own kitty!

Picture
A WHISTLING KETTLE: Introducing Haiku Comics is a show that's packed the wall, and it opened to a packed house! Great to meet and mingle with many of the contributing artists, including curators David Lasky and J.B.

Class Prices Increase June 1

5/9/2024

Picture
We believe that the arts should be accessible to all, and we've always tried to keep our prices low so more people can take our classes.

We also want to make art a sustainable career for more artists though, which means we want to pay our instructors fairly for their time. To that end, we'll be raising prices on most recurring classes on June 1st.

In the meantime though, you can sign up for classes already scheduled in May, June (and beyond!) at their current prices! We also will NOT be increasing prices for already-scheduled multi-session classes like our teen and kid summer camps!

As always, too, if you're interested in a class, but cost is a barrier, please reach out! We may have full or partial scholarships available.

A Whistling Kettle: Introducing Haiku Comics

4/30/2024

Picture
Have you ever been curious about David Lasky's super popular seasonal haiku comic classes? Now's your chance to see some of Lasky's thoughtful poetic work in person, along with a curated selection of students' work!

Join us for a SATURDAY opening reception, May 11, from 6-9pm!

Come to this free art gallery opening and poetry reading curated by J.B. and David Lasky!

With 70 pieces of art featuring 21 students of Haiku Poetry classes, A Whistling Kettle is a reading and a celebration of poetry comics. After first debuting in Thorp, WA, the show is now here in Seattle! Please come join us for complimentary wine, snacks, and good company to celebrate and mingle with haiku poetry artists.

Possibly the first group exhibition of haiku comics ever (certainly first in the US), this exhibition is a result of an online course developed by David Lasky where he melds the craft of both comic book illustration and haiku poetry. This show features a mixture of original art and prints and includes former students of his program, some of whom are from both the North and South of our borders.

So, what exactly are haiku comics? Haiku is a three-line poetic form originating in Japan. Comic strips, taking form in American newspapers, are often just three or four panels long. It turns out that the two forms blend together very well. While the Japanese art of haiga (haiku plus a drawing) is centuries old, the idea of making a haiku comic (turning a haiku poem into a comic strip of more than one panel) is something that originated in only the last 30 or so years.

This showcase of writer-artists features several notable creatives: Kevan Atteberry is a children’s book author-illustrator and the designer of Microsoft’s Clippy, the character that everyone loves to hate. Shin Yu Pai is currently Seattle’s Civic Poet. She and Justin Rueff recently released what might be the world’s first book collection of haiku comics, Less Desolate. Monica Plant has had her haiku comics featured online through the Haiku Foundation’s website.

Liz Wong is an author and illustrator with four books to her name. Author and illustrator Ellie Peterson is a 2023 Washington State Book Award Winner. Artist Tina Hoggatt has permanent work on display in the Seattle Mariners’ ballpark, while graphic novelist Megan Kelso has a comics mural, etched in stainless steel, at Climate Pledge Arena. Michael Green is one of the founders of the field of Graphic Medicine, an international network of medical professionals, scholars, and comics artists.

Stanza 2024: Non-Binary

4/4/2024

Picture
STANZA is Push/Pull's annual combination poetry and art show. Each year's work is also published in a risograph zine, released on opening day.

This year's theme is NON-BINARY and will feature original poetry paired with art inspired by each poem -- all from non-binary and gender non-conforming creators.

Join us at the opening reception, Thursday, April 18th, from 6-9 PM, for live readings by some of the poets, snacks, and mingling!

The show will be on display through Wednesday, May 16. Art on the promo graphic is by KIRISKA.

VOIDWORKS

3/11/2024

Picture
From the artist:
I kind of broke my brain in 2014 when I did an illustration a day, and subsequently drawing became harder for a while.

After a couple of years I got back into illustration again, but this time, because of too much time staring at a screen for my design jobs, I broke my eyes.

Working at the art gallery, with all our art supplies, just for kicks I bought a black paper journal and started playing around with colored pencils, which allowed my eyes to relax more, but broke my brain again—this time in a good way; I had to re-think how I approached the drawing process on a fundamental level.

This show is a result of all my attempts to rediscover my love of illustration.
Vladimir Verano is a designer and illustrator in Seattle and longtime member of Push/Pull! Join us for the Opening Reception of VOIDWORKS on Thursday, March 21st, from 6-9 PM!
