Opening Reception: Witch, Please!

11/1/2024

Picture
October 19th was the opening reception of Witch, Please! Thanks to everyone who came out! There's ONE WEEK left of the show, so if you haven't had a chance to stop by yet, do it soon! It's always awesome to see everything come together at the end of a big project like this.

There are over 50 pieces of art on the wall, all available for purchase. In this final week, you can grab them straight off the wall -- no need to come back later for pickup! Most of the pieces are 5"x5" in a 6"x6" frame, a great size for gifting, or that one small empty spot on your wall!

Prints are available for a few of the pieces as well, including a limited edition Risograph print featuring Hereditary (2018)!

Most regular Kickstarter rewards have been sent out, though there are a few tiers waiting on zine reprints or Seth's doodle and signature. If you haven't filled out your backer survey, do it soon!

Otherwise, the book is available in-store and online, as well as at Scarecrow Video. We'll also be at Short Run this weekend, so you can pick one up there too!

MO-VEMBER

Ballard's favourite server gets his own art show! Come see OVER THIRTY portraits of Hattie's Hat's celebrity author Mohammad Badeges, as painted by Maxx Follis-Goodkind.

Maxx and Mohammad have been friends for many years. Maxx has been inspired by the creative self portrait photography that Mo posts near daily. For a year Maxx has been creating paintings, drawings and embroidered work referencing Mo's photos - with his blessing, of course. Mo-vember is a radical act of seeing and being seen.

Join us for the opening reception on Saturday, November 9th, from 6-9 PM! The show will be up through December 13.

Yasmeen Abedifard: Book Signing & Talk

9/26/2024

Picture
Save the date! We're excited to congratulate Yasmeen Abedifard on her new book and to host her for a signing and talk on October 19th, from 3-5 PM!

Published by Silver Sprocket, WHEN TO PICK A POMEGRANATE is collection of contemplative and cathartic short comics, the pomegranate Anar and the woman Guli exist as reflections of each other — repellent to one another and yet inexorably drawn together once more. As they evolve through each story, proceeding through the stages of the plant life cycle, they take on new roles: muse and artist, gardener and seed, lover and fruit. The iterations reveal new revelations, exploring the themes of shame, grief, destiny, and survival at each turn.

2024 Intentionalist Awards Nominee

9/3/2024

Thank you for nominating us for the Intentionalist Awards in the Community Over Competition category! This is something we feel strongly about, so we're really honored! <33

We've been extremely lucky to have been in community with and gotten support from tons of amazing people and small businesses over the years, and we try to give back whenever we're able.

Our program Bal-Art promotes many local arts events, businesses, and artists, and most of our free meetups and community events are officially through Bal-Art. We always want to share more than is feasible for just our main social media accounts, so be sure to follow Bal-Art (on Facebook and Instagram!) for lots more event shout-outs, calls for art shares, and more!

Also, shout out to our queer-owned neighbours @doughjoydonuts for being cool and coming soon @theinkdrinkerseattle! Together we might just be the gayest corner in Ballard. 🌈✨

Draw Bugs! Riso Zine Release & Signing

9/3/2024

What an awesome book release! Thanks to all who came out to celebrate RJ's (@beccaquibbles) DRAW BUGS!

And cheers to the trio of kiddos who REALLY wanted to draw some bugs!! (Apparently they walked by the store before the event, saw the chalk art promo, and insisted on returning when it was time!) 💖🪲🐞🦗🐛

This 3-color riso zine is filled with fun bug facts and tips on how to draw them! If you've taken RJ's class of the same name, then you know what's up!

RJ's Draw Bugs! class runs monthly and switches between being an in-person and an online class.

If you can't come to class, don't worry, copies of the zine and beautiful riso prints of many featured bugs are available in-store and online!

Doing It Wrong

8/16/2024

Picture
Kiri Yu, or KIRISKA, is 100% Chinese, but has 0% training in traditional Chinese ink painting.

Despite this, they’ve always been drawn to the style of the medium and ended up approaching it in unconventional ways with non-traditional tools and branching subject matter.

Brush pen lines accompany sumi ink and Chinese watercolor on rice paper scrolls, shikishi boards, and other papers. Traditional subjects like tigers, mountains, flowers, and fruit are twisted and blended together in strange ways, demonstrating a deeply rooted but disconnected heritage.

Join us Thursday, September 12th, starting at 6pm, for the opening reception of DOING IT WRONG!
