Call For Submissions: Stanza 2025

3/4/2025

Picture
Turn over a leaf. Dig inside the couch cushions. Pick something off the bottom of your shoe. There are poems everywhere, for those willing to look.

Push/Pull's annual poetry collection, Stanza, invites wordsmiths to be the imagemakers and artists to be the poets. Using both word and image, artists are invited to submit work that crosses genres—however you choose to interpret it. Found poems, collage, poetry comics, and any other combination of language and visuals are welcome!
Submit Your Work
Stanza: Lost & Found will be printed in up to 2 colors on Risograph. Contributors will receive a contributor copy and a $50 gift card for Push/Pull's printing services, art supplies, or classes.
Interested in submitting to Stanza but don't have anything ready-made?

Join us for two FREE meetups and work parties, where you'll be able to use our extensive collection of magazines and old books for collage material and inspiration!

Make poetry collages, found poetry, black-out poetry, or something new and weird from the scraps of pages and images available!
Come Make Stuff!

Stanza: Lost & Found will open Saturday, April 12th, with an opening reception from 6-9 PM!

Artists and poets are invited to read their work, and all are invited to see and listen! Light refreshments will be provided.

2025 Book Club!

2/11/2025

Our 2025 Book Club pick is Winged Histories by Sofia Samata, and published by Small Beer Press! The book has been a longtime favourite of many staff and we're excited to share it with everyone!

Set in a fantasy world torn by war, four women—a soldier, a poet, a scholar, and a socialite—struggle not only to win a rebellion but also for their work to be remembered amidst the upheaval.

Weekly Monday evening meetings will begin April 7th and go through June 30th. Each week we'll discuss select chapters. It's fine to come to as many meetings as you're able.
Picture
Our book club always culminates in a group show, where participants are invited to submit work inspired by the book, so towards the end of the sessions, meetings transition into a bit of an open studio format to work on art pieces. The group show will open in August, so there should be plenty of time to work on pieces!

That said, all readers are welcome to participate in book club meetings and discussions, even if creating and submitting artwork isn't your end goal! We look forward to seeing you in April! In the meantime...

2024 Intentionalist Awards Nominee

9/3/2024

Thank you for nominating us for the Intentionalist Awards in the Community Over Competition category! This is something we feel strongly about, so we're really honored! <33

We've been extremely lucky to have been in community with and gotten support from tons of amazing people and small businesses over the years, and we try to give back whenever we're able.

Our program Bal-Art promotes many local arts events, businesses, and artists, and most of our free meetups and community events are officially through Bal-Art. We always want to share more than is feasible for just our main social media accounts, so be sure to follow Bal-Art (on Facebook and Instagram!) for lots more event shout-outs, calls for art shares, and more!

Also, shout out to our queer-owned neighbours @doughjoydonuts for being cool and coming soon @theinkdrinkerseattle! Together we might just be the gayest corner in Ballard. 🌈✨

Bicycle Benefits!

5/31/2024

Picture
Did you know? Most of our members don't drive! How do we get to work? Usually walking, bussing, or biking! We've got a bus stop and a bike rack right outside! And now YOU can get 10% off every time you visit the store by bike if you've got a Bicycle Benefits sticker!

The sticker is just $5, never expires, and gets you a variety of benefits at businesses across town!

How do you get here by bike? Get thee to the Burke-Gilman Trail and ride west! When you get to the Missing Link at Shilshole, cross Shilshole and take the first right onto 17th, then the first left onto Ballard Ave. Turn right at 20th and use the crosswalk to cross Leary. Push/Pull is on your left as soon as you cross Market St!
Picture

Need directions from further away? Let us know where you're coming from and we can make suggestions. :0 You can also multi-modal it, put your bike on the bus or train, and finish your last leg by bike! :)

Free up the parking spaces for folks who gotta drive. ♥

Other Ballard businesses that are a part of the Bicycle Benefits program include the Ballard Farmers Market, Mighty-O Donuts, and Electric & Folding Bikes NW!

Class Prices Increase June 1

5/9/2024

Picture
We believe that the arts should be accessible to all, and we've always tried to keep our prices low so more people can take our classes.

We also want to make art a sustainable career for more artists though, which means we want to pay our instructors fairly for their time. To that end, we'll be raising prices on most recurring classes on June 1st.

In the meantime though, you can sign up for classes already scheduled in May, June (and beyond!) at their current prices! We also will NOT be increasing prices for already-scheduled multi-session classes like our teen and kid summer camps!

As always, too, if you're interested in a class, but cost is a barrier, please reach out! We may have full or partial scholarships available.

DAZZLE Book Signing Event!

1/9/2024

Picture
We're excited to welcome writer Andrew Villone for a signing of his comic series DAZZLE, in-store on Sunday, January 21st, from noon to 2pm.

The first three issues of the comic (or four, if you count issue 0!) will be available for purchase at the event. Each issue features work by a unique roster of artists.

Also available will be Are You Ready To Be Heartbroken? which features short stories that take place within the Dazzle world but are separate from the main story. This comic was done as a creative experiment with a very talented young teenager from Kyrgyzstan, Mariia Otunchieva, who completed the whole issue without digital tools.

ABOUT DAZZLE:

Under the big top of a globe-trotting circus fueled by magic and filled with outcasts, dreamers, assassins, charlatans, monsters and angels, a young orphan girl must find both her dysfunctional family and her true self.

ABOUT CREATOR:

Andrew Villone, a native Californian who lived most of his adult life in Seattle, has spent the past two decades living, traveling, and guiding others throughout Europe and the Near East. With a keen sense of adventure and a desire to connect with the unfamiliar, he has witnessed a world most have only dreamt of. These lived experiences and connections made have built the foundation for a world of his own, expertly illustrated and told through the vibrant characters of Dazzle.

None of the other artists involved in Dazzle are American. They hail from all over the globe: Turkey, Mexico, Croatia, UK, Hong Kong and Central Asia. Dazzle is Andrew’s first and only endeavor in the comic book world. He currently resides along the coast of the Adriatic Sea.

Winter Weather Plans!

1/9/2024

Picture
We don't know if it'll snow, but we want to be prepared!

SNOW DAY HOURS: 11AM - 6PM. If there's snow or ice on the ground, these are our hours! We may further reduce hours or be closed if conditions are severe enough that even our walking-distance staff aren't able to make it in safely. Keep an eye on our social media for the latest, particularly Instagram Stories and Facebook!

CLASSES: May be canceled if travel becomes dangerous and will be rescheduled based on instructor availability. We aim to communicate class cancellations at least 24 hours ahead of time, but may not always be able to depending on how quickly conditions change. Once a class has been rescheduled, we'll let you know ASAP!

Online classes may also be affected if power outages affect an instructor. (This has happened in the past, so fingers crossed!) 🤞

ONLINE: As always, you can browse and shop our entire store online, as well as check out upcoming classes. Limited hours and store closures are rough, and we appreciate your support! 💖
